An international student whose course is of at least 6 months or more duration will be entitled to free or subsidised treatment in the UK under the National Health Service (NHS).
Those in the UK for less than 6 months may only receive free emergency treatment on the NHS but if they are a national or resident in a European Economic area country or are studying full- time in Scotland they will receive this benefit regardless of the length of study.
Registering with a doctor
Students must be registered with a doctor (GP) to receive any kind of treatment through the NHS. To do this it is necessary to show proof of student’s status, address and passport. An NHS medical card will be sent which can also be used to register with a dentist. Doctor’s consultation is free although any prescribed medicines must be paid for unless the student is less than 19 years of age and in full-time education. A prescription cost £6 per item.
